The birth of ‘soap’? Over 150 years ago people waited eagerly on the dockside in New York for the latest serialisation of Charles Dickens novels. These were sent out by boat from England in instalments. No! No! No! I am not comparing Leslie Spears’ weekly writings with the great master, but what I can tell you is that I just can’t wait to hear Leslie’s answers and read the inspirational way he shares his experiences, advice and knowledge. As I wrote to Leslie, last week, I feel lucky! “Don’t you?” This week I asked him, “Leslie, from all the wealth of experience you have, the knowledge you have gathered and the success you have achieved, which or what do you consider was or is the most valuable?” “Charlie, you are making this tough,” Leslie replied. “Isn’t that what I’m supposed to do when I represent our friends? Anyway you love a challenge.”
Charlie, let me share this with you... There is no silver bullet, no one answer in life or business that will provide you with a magic ride. In life it is all about self-awareness and spiritual discovery, the ‘pits and the peaks’ and gaining wisdom from the daily experiences of living through the ‘highs’ and the ‘lows’, and insights from the ’tree of life.’ As my friend Keith has so often reminded me… “every up-side has a down side”. I once read “the trouble with experience is that it gives you the ‘test’ before the ‘training,’” which can sometimes be fatal and that’s a pretty tough test, wouldn’t you agree?
In business it is all about leadership from the top and the front line leadership of the business. It is all about the culture and management of the business as expressed everyday through its ideas, beliefs, values and the daily behaviour of the whole Team. And in both cases, life and business, coping with and adapting to the continuous ‘challenges of change’.
The most important thing I discovered about business is almost every senior executive and business owner becomes too busy to succeed. It is the nature of the role.
You always end up with more work than you have the time in which to accomplish it. You must have already heard the phrase “too busy to succeed.” So what’s the answer? When you cut hair your success depends on your social skills, innate and learned artist and craft skills and the receptionist managing your time.
An executive is a knowledge worker. It can be a lonely role. There is no such thing as time management! Everyone has the same 24 hours in a day. The tramp / hobo and the successful business person both have the same 24 hours in a day. So why do some people succeed and flourish whilst others fail? It is all about ‘choice management’ not time management; and you making informed decisions about how you can make the greatest contribution to the success of the business. And, all importantly, to do this in the full face of a formidable challenge - the challenge from the great enemy of success, ‘normal behaviour.’
There are tasks and jobs you prefer doing, love doing and things you’ll always put off doing and that is without the distraction of other people getting you to do what they think you should be doing. People, consciously or unconsciously, getting you to do their work by transferring the monkey on their back to your back. How often have you spoken with someone about their problem and on walking away, noticed that their problem is now your problem? The monkey jumped from their back to yours and you’re only half way across the salon or office and it’s not yet 9 o’clock in the morning. There are also the ‘time wasters;’ a coffee and a gossip here and there.
All this is just ‘normal behaviour’ for you and other people and whilst it is happening you are not making the ‘important choice’ of you being effective and efficient. You are not making the most important and greatest contribution to the success of the business.
Being effective means putting your time where it counts most at any point in time. That’s not always as easy and obvious as it sounds either. That’s why the statement I made last week is more important than it first appears: “Most people don’t know what they don’t know.”
It is a tug of war, with ‘You & Your Results’ in the middle. ‘Normal Behaviour’ at one end of the rope, with the strength of a ‘tractor’ pulling you one-way; at the other end of the rope, ‘Unknowingness’ with all the energy of a fly.
The result? No contest. The outcome? A forgone conclusion. ‘Normal behaviour’ and the failure to be effective wins the tug-a-war in ‘choice management’ and you and the business lose out. Of course, it is sometimes not so noticeable in ‘boom’ times but exceedingly dangerous in the ‘tough’ times. The answer; through ‘self awareness’ and ‘increased knowledge’ make more ‘informed choices’ as to how you use of your time and measure your contribution by the ‘results’. Knowledge is power only when turned into action and producing the ‘rights results’.
Over thirty years ago I wrote an article for a magazine on this very subject. I called it “The Hidden and Silent Time Bombs” in your business, waiting to blow it up.
There are many demands on your time: things or situations which have become critical; that’s without those which are urgent but not yet critical (the gotta do’s). They have reached this stage usually because they were not done when they were supposed to be done.
Normal behaviour and poor 'choice management' won the war again!
Procrastination becomes a habit! You put off each day what you or someone else should do today and you push it forward to tomorrow and then tomorrow becomes just sometime in the future. This goes on until it becomes another crisis, another unplanned ‘gotta do.’ Now who or what is making the decisions about where your time counts most? The answer? The habit of procrastination!
Why do the critical and the urgent get your attention because they have become ‘noisy’, people asking or sometimes screaming for your time? As the old proverb puts it ‘the squeaky door gets the oil.’ Well, what should you be doing? You should be doing the ‘important’ things, the things which will make the greatest contribution to the success of the business, “success by design” rather than crisis by default or accident. How do you know what is important at the time? For a start it is silent. It is not asking to be done of itself or by anyone else. There are no alarm bells ringing. You have to know it already through your education or training or you have to go looking for it.
For example, cash-flow planning and review are part of my ‘five fundamentals.’ They remain quiet until you are having trouble paying your tax and Vat bills and you’re late with the rent.
A cash-flow crisis is not so quiet and that’ll get your time and attention alright. Moving from one crisis to another sometimes called ‘management by default’ is, in my opinion, not management at all.
You Must Become 'Effective' & 'Efficient'...
Effective: choosing the ‘right things’ and the ‘right projects’ in which to invest your precious and valuable time;
Efficient: doing them at the ‘right time’ in the ‘right way’ and the ‘right cost’ with a plan of action.
One of my best insights was “an accident is a series of things and events which were not supposed to happen together; happening”.
Success is the exact opposite: ‘success by design’ is a series of happenings designed and tested to happen at the right time, in the right way - normal people achieving extraordinary things with a great sense of satisfaction and fulfilment. “People loving what they do and the people with whom they do it.” In fact, this concept is one of several key principles which make up my portfolio of management and have contributed to my being involved in four business phenomena.
I call it “success by design through a flash of instant learning or enlightenment or a systematic process of ‘discovery learning’.”
If you go to sleep with the comfort of knowing you’re already focused on what’s important; you’ll wake up fired-up, not screwed-up, and never in the ‘fog of unknowing’.
